Roero Arneis Sordo 2021
The Roero Arneis by Giovanni Sordo is a beautiful expression of this ancient white grape variety. Although Piemonte is traditionally associated with red wines, it actually boasts an interesting production of whites, especially from indigenous grapes. One of these is born right in the shadow of Barolo and Barbaresco, on the other side of the Tanaro river, which divides the Langhe territory from Roero. It is a wine fragrant, harmonious, and aromatic, with an intense and savory sip. An elegant label that completes the range of great wines from this historic Piedmontese winery.
The Roero Arneis wine is the result of a great Barolo producer's desire to also work with white grape varieties. Giovanni Sordo produces the Arneis with grapes from vineyards cultivated in Vezza d'Alba, in the heart of the beautiful hilly area of Roero, at an altitude of about 250 meters above sea level. The marl soils, particularly rich in ancient marine sands and fossils, are very suitable for white grape varieties and especially for the indigenous Arneis. At the end of the gentle pressing of the grapes, the must is fermented in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperature. The wine rests for a few months in steel on the fine lees, in order to acquire greater structure and more complex aromas, and finishes aging with 3 months in bottle.
The Roero Arneis Sordo is the offspring of a grape variety that has become increasingly appreciated in recent years for its captivating aromas and fruity softness. It is an ideal white to enjoy with appetizers or seafood first courses, with second courses based on vegetables, grilled fish, or delicate white meats. It presents itself with a pale straw yellow color, with bright greenish reflections. The bouquet is fragrant and intense, with aromas of acacia flowers and orange blossom, scents of lemon zest, white fruit, peach, apple, soft hints of tropical fruit, and light honeyed nuances. The sip is broad and harmonious, characterized by ripe and creamy fruit, which lingers persistently towards a fresh and savory finish.
